SHACK IN THE BARLEY - CATALOGUE

shitbar008 - The Golden Gonk - Cat in a Courtyard / A Cloud Imitating a Bush (CD-R, May 2004) OUT OF PRINT

1. Cat in a Courtyard
2. A Cloud Imitating a Bush

Pre-release taster single for the Songtrees album. Two solo Spanish guitar compositions recorded in the oh so airless MC11, Preston, Lancashire. Produced by Dave…err, I say produced…he pressed ‘stop’ on the computer every time I messed up. “Cat…” is a favourite of Andrew Walden Jones. He told me he played it three times one afternoon. Three times IN A ROW! He hated the B-side though. CD-R released in an edition of 10.

OUT OF PRINT- CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

shitbar009 - The Golden Gonk - Songtrees (CD-R, June 2004) £3.00

1. “Sleeping on Clouds Causes Heartbreak”
2. “Easy Moribund Algebra Told Us Where the Easter Eggs Were”
3. “The Red Beasts of the Field, the Lady & the Wasp”
4. “Sunshine Onion Skins on a Holy Wall”
5. “Stained Green Apples Decay the August Moon”
6. “Hallucinations of Mahogany Cafes Burning In Fields Caused Everyone to Explode Into Stars”
7. “Your Own Maniacal Laughter Consumed by the Humming of Numbing Inevitability”
8. “It Was Dusty in the Room Where I Broke the Kettle”

A second attempt at making an all-instrumental, all-fun platter, following the Second Gnu Phenomenon disaster (don't ask!!). Recorded May 2004 in MC11 and Room 210, Preston, Lancashire. Half the tracks feature David Sanders on (variously) electric guitar, loops and (I think) a paper bag. The fan feedback at the time was generally good- one girl told me it was like nothing she’d ever heard before, while another girl (yes ok, I only gave copies out to girls...what’s wrong with that?) said it was “good music to revise to”. Err, whatever turns you on, love.

shitbar010 - The Golden Gonk - Individual Grace- A Pauper's Supper, or Music to Ignore (CD-R, June 2005) £3.00

1. Parts 1-5

“Ooh, a Rat”
“Plan B is a Secret”
“Ask Next Time”
“Owls”
“Amoeba Footprints”

2. Parts 6-10

“But of Course, Electric Mould”
“Piece for Depressing War Memorials”
“Fat Pigeon”
“I’ve Never Been in the Winter”
“I’m Sure We’ll Find Some Use for It”

Yes, that really is the full title. Don’t let anyone tell you any different. This is the first of two ‘sister’ albums (the second being Hye & Hellow)- both ‘conceived’ during summer 2004, then ‘birthed’ in spring 2005. Recorded in Room 210, Preston, Lancashire with Dave contributing balalaika, bottles thrown at a metal bin and muttered satanic curses. As you can see, the tracks are clustered together to form extended PSYCHEDELIC sound tapestries (MAN) as a lot of them sounded too lame as standalone pieces (HEHE ONLY JOKING). Individual Grace… and Hye & Hellow were (allegedly) inspired by “a night in a city, a dying season, a shop window, an object reflecting the sun on a hillside, rust, insect infestation and flapjacks” though I don’t remember how/why (nor should you). Oh and thanks to LEON for the GONG.

shitbar011 - The Golden Gonk - Hye & Hellow (CD-R, June 2005) £3.00

1. Parts 1-5

“Papery”
“Trembling Glass”
“Toothless Tiger & the Mountains of the Moon”
“The Same Smile”
“Scratched”

2. Parts 6-10

“Wilderness (Medley- i) Woolly Mammoth, ii) Green Twilight Raga)”
“I’d Sooner Be a Moon”
“Alligator or Flamingo”
“Caught in the Rain”
“Night Moves”

This is the second of two ‘sister’ albums (the first being Individual Grace...)- both ‘conceived’ during summer 2004, then ‘birthed’ in spring 2005. Recorded in Room 210, Preston, Lancashire with Dave contributing err, not a lot on this one (probably too busy checking out Spanish girls in the library). As you can see, yet again the tracks are clustered together to form extended PSYCHEDELIC sound tapestries (MAN) as a lot of them sounded too lame as standalone pieces (REALLY THIS TIME HEHE...). Individual Grace… and Hye & Hellow were (allegedly) inspired by “a night in a city, a dying season, a shop window, an object reflecting the sun on a hillside, rust, insect infestation and flapjacks” though I don’t remember how/why (nor should you). Oh and thanks to LEON for the GONG.

shitbar012 - The Golden Gonk - Gonk Skronk (CD-R, March 2006) £3.00

1. “Mouth, Mouse, Armpit, Tarpit & Cowshit”
2. “Muffled Laughter Behind Half-Open Doors”

Recorded during the sessions for Individual Grace…/Hye & Hellow. Gonk Skronk was actually planned as a double album- the ‘lost’ half was to consist of a suite of tunes played on Spanish guitar, some reworkings of old unreleased Golden Gonk pieces and other such oddities but time said no. “Mouth, Mouse…” features the classic line up of Dave on freaky guitar loops and me on piano/crisps.

shitbar013 - The Golden Gonk - The Hollow Roll of the Egg (CD-R, April 2006) £3.00

1. “The Sagittarian Gong”
2. “Bird of Stars”
3. “Nine Line Dream”
4. “The Prehistoric Ruins of the Banana People”
5. “Sleepy Gerbil Raga”
6. “The Lion Set Sail”

Yet another set recorded during the amazingly fruitful Individual Grace…/Hye & Hellow sessions of joy. This one consists of six otherwise homeless pieces- two of which feature the inevitable DAVE. I think this one actually started life as a 'duets' album- the lazy improv Bert & John if you will- but we grew too fat on flapjacks to see it to the finishing line, so the rest is just me. Not to worry though- the album contains "Bird of Stars" which is perhaps the ultimate GG piece to date. Dan Scott (Happy Band of Japan) said this:

"Bird of Stars does sound like a ‘bird of stars’....whatever that is"

Someone else (ANDREW WALDEN JONES) said it was ridiculously long, but I think he had it on repeat and didn't realise.

shitbar014 - The Golden Gonk - Untitled (CD-R, May 2006) REPRESS COMING SOON

1. “Through Some Door in the Dark”
2. “Mass Evacuation of Friends”
3. “Cold Book”
4. “Really!”
5. “I Took Myself to a Calm Space”

I really, really couldn’t think of a decent title to hang sedately over these five pieces so I left it untitled. Actually I did think of one name but……no…..I can’t really repeat it as my website would be taken down and you’d all hate me forever. The first Golden Gonk album to be recorded on 8 track entirely AT HOME. What mirth! Inspired mostly by shifts in plate tectonics and Monjur leaving work (only temporarily as it turned out). The tracks are long-ish improvisations, mostly tuneless and chaotic but all fun.

shitbar015 - The Golden Gonk - Slept Like a Log (CD-R, October 2006) REPRESS COMING SOON

1. “Clouds & Crows Having Orgasms”
2. “Bloodsucking Grass”
3. “Paws Full of Claws”
4. “Like a Prehistoric Bird in Waiting”
5. “The Winter Died”
6. “It Will Rain All Week”
7. “Conversation of Stones”
8. “The Silt”

Again, I couldn’t think up a decent title for this album but called it Slept Like a Log anyway. Recording began on 6/6/06 and limped on deep into the autumn months. At 70 minutes, Slept Like a Log is almost as mind-numbingly epic as Songtrees. Wow! Bucolic, vaguely psychedelic electric 'folk' improv, some charred and soggy forest scrapings disguised as music and an 18 minute freakout to finish; featuring an extended tinfoil/knife duet and a TON of crazed broken-sticks-on-row-of-old-briefcases thwacking. An enduring document!

shitbar016 - The Golden Gonk - Flower Throats (CD-R, September 2006) £3.00

1. “Cough Like Shattering Glass”
2. “There’s Dust to Drink”

Started as one thing...ended up another. Doesn't everything these days...

I don't wanna go all vain on you but this is my favourite album I've done!! Don't worry though- I hate all the others HEHE!!

shitbar017 - The Golden Gonk - Flung or Slung Into the Chattering Abyss… (CD-R, July 2006) REPRESS COMING SOON

1. “Neither Flesh Nor Fish Nor Good Red Herring”
2. “A Fish Needs a Hat”
3. “And Death is Deaf (Blood is Blind, Fish are Dumb)”

Thirty three minutes of terrifying and ridiculously dissonant….err, something or other! Guitars rasp and clang, drums plod, fiddles and melodeons transform into hideous weapons of destruction before your very ears. This is most definitely not the Golden Gonk of sweet love songs like “No Shoes”…..or even the Golden Gonk in bad trip “Your Own Maniacal Laughter Consumed By the Humming of Numbing Inevitability” mode…..no, this is something else altogether! A sinister mutation. Gadzooks! Recorded summer 2006. Yes, BLAME THE HEAT. The full EP title is actually 30 words long but I can’t remember it all, nor do I want to.

1. “Low Winter Sun”
2. “Stagnant Marsh”

EP of archive recordings remixed, reworked, extended and generally messed around with. The first track contains exciting extracts from the face-melting Golden Gonk live experience (May 2005- St. Peter’s Arts Centre, Preston, Lancashire) while the second is comprised of recordings made in someone else’s bedroom, April 2003.

3. “The Unwelcome Spirit”
4. “Reed Lanterns”
5. “Antiques Found in the Woods”
6. “Black Ice, Cabbage Roses and Bark Alchemy Somewhere Up Near This Winter’s Moon”

Epic debut statement by Fornicating Fog. Two huge kosmische/drone inspired suites bookend some loud bowed guitar things and a stretch of creepy ‘secluded garden at midnight’ lucid minimalism. Recorded Autumn 2006.

7.

Seven solo guitar improvisations (5 nylon strung Spanish and 2 electric) in an assortment of obscene tunings recorded over two nights during August 2006. Features guest appearance by annoying helicopter. Album title inspired by a Polish postage stamp featuring a painting of- you guessed it- a lobster sat in an armchair. Smoking a pipe. A nice abstract, intimate image that I found oddly comforting- thought the title would fit the abstract, intimate and oddly comforting music on said disc.

As you can see, a neat compilation featuring music by some of the groups I am involved with. None of the tracks will feature anywhere else, ever. THIS WILL BE THEIR ONLY HOME FOR EVER MORE.

Last track is a 26 minute all star big band meeting of minds orgy. As you might have guessed.
